Pretty Boy is one of the main characters in Teacher's Pet.

Biography[]

"Pretty Boy is a bossy, big-mouthed canary bird with a Napoleon complex. His arrogance is matched only by his love for seed bells and soaps. Pretty Boy hollers at Spot for acting like a boy. Pretty Boy pretty much hollers at everyone for everything. But when he's not hollering, he's got a lovely singing voice."

Appearance[]

Pretty Boy is a canary bird. He has a orange beak, green feathers, lighter stomach and yellow claws.

Personality[]

Pretty Boy is Leonard's pet bird who stays at home with Mr. Jolly. He's a mean-spirited and sarcastic bird who insults everyone he comes in contact with. Despite being grumpy, he is still a good friend, he does whatever he can to help those he cares about and is always honest about his intentions.

History[]

Early Life[]

Pretty Boy used to live in a pet shop. At one point, he met a goose named Gertie and fell in love with her, but it never went anywhere because she had to fly south for the winter.[1] Eventually, he was adopted by the Helperman family and he met Spot. Little is known about his parents, although it is revealed his mother is deceased in "Pet Project" and that his father was from New Jersey.[2]

Teacher’s Pet[]

Pretty Boy is featured in the subplots of the series along with Mr. Jolly, the pet cat, and they have adventures of their own. They mostly stay inside the house watching television and using Leonard's computer, however they did leave it twice during the series, first in "Saving Mr. Jolly" when they each thought they were each missing and in "Pet Project" when Leonard and Scott brought them to school for pet day. Additionally, in "The Grass Seed is Always Greener", Pretty Boy leaves the house separately and goes into craziness, with Scott and Leonard struggling to get him back.

Teacher’s Pet: The Movie[]

At the end of the school year, Spot has decided that after a year of dressing up as a boy, he wants to become a real one. Pretty Boy claims it to be a load of bunk. When Mrs. Helperman is elected as a finalist for Teacher of the Year, Principal Stickler lends the Helpermans his RV to help them get to Florida. The only problem is that pets aren't allowed in the RV, so Spot, Jolly and Pretty Boy have to stay at home with a petsitter.

Back home, Mr. Jolly and Pretty Boy set off to warn Spot about Dr. Krank after finding out that his experiments turn animals into mutants instead of humans (although, that was because Krank needed mammals to make a human). After hijacking an air show, hitching a ride with bikers, getting lost in Cuba and arriving by a viaduct, they manage to find their owners. They arrive at the RV, but Leonard rudely says, "Oh it's you". Pretty Boy and Jolly get understandably mad at him and decide to leave. Upon seeing his cat and bird leave, Leonard apologizes and embraces them, stating he is really happy to see them. He then proceeds to explain what has happened to Spot. After talking it over, Leonard and the pets decide that if they really love Spot, they'll let him have his dream and support him. Leonard comes to the conclusion that the only way to bring them back together is to have Krank turn him into Spot's new dog. Pretty Boy and Jolly agree, until they realize what he said. They try to stop him, but Leonard has already left.

Spot (who is now a man) arrives to the RV and asks them what they are doing here. Pretty Boy and Jolly don't recognize Spot at first, but he tells them his true identity. They inform Spot that Leonard is on his way to have Krank turn him into a dog. Fearful of what harm could come to the boy, the pets run out the door to save their master. They arrive at the lab, but Krank's minions capture them easily. Spot has Pretty Boy and Jolly distract Dennis and Adele, while he stops Krank from using the machine. During the fight, Jolly and Pretty Boy are briefly turned into humans. Using the nickel that Krank gave him earlier, Spot reactivates the machine and changes Krank into a mouse. While Jolly chases Krank out of the lab, the machine begins to overload. Seeing this as his last chance to turn back to normal and make things right, Spot stands in front of the machine, gets zapped and the lab explodes. Leonard looks for Spot and sees that he has turned into a pile of blue ashes. Certain that his best friend is dead, Leonard kicks the machine, which reactivates and zaps Spot again, returning him to his original dog form and Pretty Boy wakes him up from his coma. Now with a newfound sense of pride, Spot declares that is proud of being a dog. Leonard and the pets head off to the awards ceremony.

At the awards ceremony, the pets wonder how they’re going to get home without Leonard’s mom finding out they’re in Florida. Spot dresses up as Scott Leadready to convince Mrs. Helperman to drive him home, while Jolly and Pretty Boy hold onto the RV's back ladder.

Trivia[]

  • Pretty Boy's voice actor, the late Jerry Stiller, also worked with Nathan Lane when he played Uncle Max in The Lion King 1½.
  • In the show, Pretty Boy sings operatically, but in the movie, he sings in his normal voice.
  • In the movie, Pretty Boy is briefly turned into a human, which doesn’t make sense, since the machine was supposed to turn mammals into humans, not other animals.
